# Creating and Configuring Test Types

Only users assigned the **Create Local Assessment Tests** right can create a new test type and configure test types. Setting up test types helps teachers, school-level, and district-level users organize the assessments they create within Author.

## **Managing School- and District-Level Test Types**

District data administrators can create assessments for the district; meanwhile, school data administrators can create assessments for their school.

For test type management, it is advisable to reserve some test types for district-level assessments and others for school-level assessments.

Changing a test type’s View Option from school-level to district-level, or vice versa, generates a warning if tests already exist for that test type. The warning displays the number of assessments currently assigned to the affected test type and their test state. The data administrator can then choose which same-level type to place the existing tests into or cancel the change.
