# Creating and Managing Questions in the Local Item Bank

You can add a custom question to a local item bank as needed. Adding item bank questions is similar to the [test question creation process](/v1/docs/creating-new-assessment-questions-in-aware). Once the question is created, you can link it to one or more resources, such as reading passages, graphs, or charts. Resources must be approved before adding associated questions.

> **Note:** If you copy and paste text from another source, be sure to click the **Clear Formatting** button on the **Questions**tab.

### Adding a Question to the Item Bank

1. Select **Questions & Resources** from the **Item Bank** section of the main menu.
2. Select **My Items** ( list_alt ).
3. Under the **My Questions** tab, select the **Add Local Item** button. Then, choose the question type.
4. Select **Add Course**.
5. Choose the course to associate with the question.
6. Add any standards, complexity level information, and/or language preferences, then enter the question text and any other necessary information.
7. Select **Create**.

> [!NOTE]
> **Note:**The question exists in **My Items** until the approval process is complete. Once it is approved and published to the local item bank, you can no longer edit or delete the question.

### Linking a Question to a Resource

1. Select **Questions & Resources** from the **Item Bank** section of the main menu.
2. Select **My Items** ( list_alt ).
3. Locate the question and select the **Link Question to Resource** icon ( insert_link ) in the question header.
4. Select the resources to link and then select **Update**.

### Editing a Question in the Item Bank

1. Select **Questions & Resources** from the **Item Bank** section of the main menu.
2. Select **My Items** ( list_alt ).
3. Locate the question and select the **Edit** pencil icon ( edit ) in the question header.
4. Make changes as needed and then select **Update**.

### Deleting a Question from the Item Bank

1. Select **Questions & Resources** from the **Item Bank** section of the main menu.
2. Select **My Items** ( list_alt ).
3. Locate the question and select the **Delete** trash can icon ( delete ) in the question header.
4. Select **OK** to confirm.

**Step 1:** Select **Questions & Resources** from the **Item Bank** section of the main menu.

**Step 2:** Select **My Items** ( list_alt ).

**Step 3:**On the **My Questions** tab, select the **Add Local Item** button and then choose the question type from the resulting drop-down.

**Step 4:** Select **Add Course**.

**Step 5:**In the **Curriculum Courses** window, expand the sections ( keyboard_arrow_right ) or use the search bar ( search ) to locate and select the course you want to associate with the question.

> [!WARNING]
> **Caution:**The question is permanently linked to the selected course. Once the question is created, there is no way to edit the subject or grade level.

**Step 6:** Add any standards, complexity level information, and/or language preferences, then any other information needed to complete the question, such as question test and answer choices. Requirements vary depending on the question type you selected. See the article about the[test question creation process](/v1/docs/creating-new-assessment-questions-in-aware) for more information. Questions must have at least one standard attached to them before they can be created and published, depending on the user’s role.

**Step 7:**Select **Create**,****or with the necessary permissions, you can choose**Create & Publish**to make the question available immediately. Once the question is created, it passes through the item bank workflow for approval. ## Linking a Question to a Resource

Once the question is created, you can link it to one or more resources. Return to the **My Items** screen to locate the question.****

> **Note:** Linking an item to more than one passage in the item bank requires a test author to add both resources to see the item linked appropriately.

**Step 1:** Select **Questions & Resources** from the **Item Bank** section of the main menu.

**Step 2:** Select **My Items** ( list_alt ).

**Step 3:** Locate the question and select the **Link Question to Resource** icon ( insert_link ) in the question header.

**Step 4:**Select the checkbox for each resource to link and then select **Update**.

## Editing a Question in the Item Bank

**Step 1:** Select **Questions & Resources** from the **Item Bank** section of the main menu.

## Deleting a Question From the Item Bank

**Step 1:** Select **Questions & Resources** from the **Item Bank** section of the main menu.

**Step 2:** Select **My Items** ( list_alt ).

**Step 3:** Locate the question and select the **Delete** trash can icon ( delete ) in the question header.

**Step 4:**A confirmation message appears. Select **OK** to confirm that you want to delete the question.
