# Item Weighting

When creating assessments, the test author can adjust the weight value of individual items to increase or decrease the raw value (points) for the item. In other words, by changing the weight you modify how much that item “counts” toward the overall assessment score. By default, items assume a standard weight. Changing the item weight modifies the total number of possible points that a student can earn for that test question.

You might choose to vary item weight for multi-step problems, to differentiate difficulty or level of understanding for a problem, omit items from the overall score, or apply more weight to items that match more heavily emphasized standards in the curriculum.

> - If you change weights after****students have taken the test (or after answer sheets scanned) you might need to [rescore the test](/v1/docs/rescoring-an-assessment) so the new weighting is applied.
> - Use weighting thoughtfully. Giving too many items very high weight can skew scoring heavily toward a few questions and might distort overall representation of student learning.

## **Item Weight per Scoring Method**

Editing the item weight will affect item scores differently depending on which [scoring method](/v1/docs/selecting-scoring-methods-for-assessments) you’ve applied.

### **Correct/Incorrect**

Students receive either 1 point or no points for correct and incorrect answers respectively. For 3 correct answers, getting a single answer incorrect will result in the student receiving no points. Selecting all 3 correct answers gives them 1 point. If the item weight is set to 2, then the item score will be either 0 x 2 = 0 or 1 x 2 = 2.

### **Point per Task**

Adjusting the item weight doubles the amount of possible points a student can receive. For example, if there are 3 correct answer choices and you set the item weight to 2, then the item score will be set to 6.

### **Partial Credit (0-1-2)**

For 3 correct answer choices, the maximum they can receive is 2 points. If the item weight is set to 2, then the item score will be set to 4. If a student receives partial credit of 1 point and the item weight is set to 2, then they will receive 2 points.

## **Editing Item Weight**

When creating or editing an assessment in Aware, you can modify item weight either from the **Questions**tab or the **Test Key** tab.

### **Editing Item Weight from the Questions Tab**

**Step 1:**On the **Questions** tab, select **Add New Item** ( add_circle ) to create a new question or select the **Edit** icon ( edit ) for an existing question.

**Step 2:**In the **Item Weight** field, enter a number or use the up and down arrows to adjust the number shown in the field.

**Step 3:**Select **Create** is adding a new question or **Update** if editing an existing question.

### **Editing Item Weight from the Test Key Tab**

**Step 1:**On the **Test Key**tab, locate the question you want to modify and select the **Edit**icon ( edit ).

**Step 2:**In the **Item Max x Item Weight**column, enter a number or use the up and down arrows to adjust the number shown in the field.

**Step 3:**Select **Save**( save ) to save your changes.

## Using Item Weight to Omit Test Questions

If the item weight is set to 0, the test question does not count toward the student’s total score. You might set the item weight to 0 for questions intended for data collection or prompts.

For example, “Did you read the instructions before starting the test?” encourages students to go back and read the instructions if they have not already. If the item weight is 0, their answer to this question will not contribute to their actual grade on the test.
