# Scope and Sequence

**Scope and Sequence** provides an overview of standards and strategies coverage across preps for the selected course and date range. At a glance, the table shows how many teachers who teach the course have included the relevant learning standards or instructional strategies in their planners. Beacon pulls information from the teacher’s preps to determine which teachers to include in the analysis and whether or not the standard or strategy is included in their plans for the selected dates. A deeper dive into the analysis allows you to see exactly which teachers have or have not included the learning standard or instructional strategy in their planners for the selected date or date range.

### How does Scope and Sequence help ensure standards and strategies coverage?

This analysis tool pulls data from teacher planners to create an overview of coverage, allowing you to quickly scan for missed standards or strategies and assess when and how often they are used.

****Example:****

**Objective:** You want to make sure that your 9th-grade science teachers cover learning standards about lab safety during the first week of school.

**Setting up the table:** To configure the Scope and Sequence screen, select Standards from the drop-down menu, set the date range, and select the 9th-grade science course. When the table appears, click a row header to view coverage of the standard.

**Analyzing data:** Dates on which teachers included this standard in their planners are highlighted in the table. The panel on the right shows which teachers included the standard in the date range, which included the standard outside of the date range, and which did not include the standard in their planners.

**Next steps:** If you find that some teachers prefer to teach this standard in the second week of school rather than the first or third, reach out to that group to understand their reasoning and make adjustments accordingly.

## Standards or Instructional Strategies

Scope and Sequence allows you to view coverage of learning standards or instructional strategies. After navigating to the Scope and Sequence page, use the drop-down menu to choose which you would like to analyze.

### Standards

When you select **Standards**, the table updates to show coverage of learning standards across teacher planners. These are the state-set educational benchmarks that define what students should know, understand, and be able to do at a specific stage of their education, by subject and grade level.

### Instructional Strategies

When you select **Instructional Strategies**, the table updates to show coverage of [strategies](/v1/docs/strategies) across teacher planners. Strategies are defined within Beacon by your curriculum leaders and might include all sorts of tools for learning, such as supports or activities.

Strategies are custom tags that district users and curriculum owners can create to help users locate and identify components based on the instructional strategies employed in the lesson, unit, etc.
