Why isn’t Speech-to-Text working?

To use Speech-to-Text, you must first allow the microphone to access the browser. Learn how you can grant microphone permissions across your district and on students’ individual devices by viewing LockDown Browser: Microphone Settings for Speech-to-Text on Chromebooks.

Eduphoria's Speech-to-Text support is not supported when using LockDown Browser on iPad. To enable Speech-to-Text for LockDown Browser for iPad, use the iPad’s built-in dictation feature.

  1. To enable dictation, go to Settings.

  2. Select General.

  3. Select Keyboard.

When dictation is enabled on the device, a microphone icon appears in the on-screen keyboard. Tap the microphone icon to begin recording and converting to text. Additionally, if a Bluetooth keyboard is being used, a shortcut can be set to activate dictation.

Why does a student have access to Text-to-Speech when it is not enabled in Eduphoria?

The iPad’s built-in Text-to-Speech feature cannot be disabled by LockDown Browser. This means that all students can access Text-to-Speech on iPad regardless of whether Eduphoria’s Text-to-Speech support is enabled.

If you are experiencing issues with Text-to-Speech on Chromebooks, please check your configuration settings or reach out to a Google representative. Because districts manage Chromebooks in different ways, Eduphoria will likely be unable to assist with Text-to-Speech issues on managed Chromebooks.
