Importing a QTI Package into the Item Bank

Users with the Manage Custom Item Banks right can import prebuilt assessment packages purchased through curriculum vendors into a custom item bank. To successfully import these items, the vendor must provide a QTI package. Eduphoria supports most items that follow QTI version 2.2 and below.

Note: Some items provided by vendors use customized formatting that is not supported by our assessment platform, even when following the QTI v2.2 specifications. These items are skipped during import, while correctly formatted items import successfully. For more information, please see the Troubleshooting section of Managing Item Bank Imports.

From the Custom Item Banks table, you can either import items into an existing item bank or create a new one. Items imported from a QTI package are loaded into custom item banks; they do not go to the local item bank.

Note: Once the custom item bank exists, you can delete items, but you cannot edit them directly from the bank. However, after the items are copied into an assessment, you can edit them from the assessment.

Quick Guide

  1. From the main menu, select the Item Bank Settings gear icon ( settings ).

  2. Choose Manage Custom Banks.

  3. Access the Import Items screen either by creating a new item bank or opening the import options for an existing item bank.

  4. Select Choose File to locate and select the QTI package file from the file manager on your device or drag and drop the file from the file manager window to the Drop the File Here to Upload space on the screen.

  5. Select Begin Import.

Illustrated Guide

Step 1: From the main menu, select the Item Bank Settings gear icon ( settings ).

Step 2: From the resulting drop-down menu, choose Manage Custom Banks.

Step 3: Start by creating a new item bank or access the import options for an existing item bank:

  • To create a new item bank, select Create Item Bank. Set the Bank Title and Access Permissions. Then, select Create and Continue. The Import Items screen appears. For complete instructions, see Creating a Custom Item Bank.

    or

  • To import into an existing item bank, in the Actions column for the bank you want to edit, select the Add plus sign icon ( add ). The Import Items screen appears. For complete instructions, see Importing Additional Items into a Custom Item Bank.

Step 4: On the Import Items screen, do one of the following:

  • Select Choose File to locate and select the QTI package file from the file manager on your device.
    or

  • If the file manager is already open, you can drag and drop the file from the file manager window to the Drop the File Here to Upload space on the screen.

Note: The system can upload up to five files simultaneously with a maximum file size of 20MB each. QTI packages must be in their original format with a top-level immsmanifest.xml file. Do not extract the individual QTI packages before importing them. If your ZIP file contains multiple QTI packages, do extract them to separate the individual QTI packages before uploading.

Step 5: If importing into an existing item bank, complete the additional steps:

  1. Choose whether to Replace Existing Items and then select Next.

  2. Choose whether to Restore Delete Items and then select Next.

For complete instructions, see Importing Additional Items into a Custom Item Bank.

Step 6: Select Begin Import.

The validation process checks that the file is in a valid format. Once confirmed, the import process begins. Importing items, especially for large item banks, takes time, so the import continues to run in the background, allowing you to leave the page and come back later to check on the import’s progress.

Reviewing the Import Process

The Import Log shows the progress of the import. When the import is complete, you can confirm and begin to review items.

To access the Import Log, locate the item bank that you want to view in the Custom Item Banks list. Select the More Actions ellipsis icon ( more_vert ) in the Actions column and then choose Manage Imports. Select the Import ID on the Manage Imports screen to open the Import Log.

The table below provides a list of item interactions, a description of the item, and whether the item is supported. If items that are not supported are included in the QTI package, you will need to work with the vendor that provided the QTI package to make edits to the file. Export the Import Log to provide the vendor with additional details if needed. While we support QTI 2.x, there are limitations to any question authoring system.
